The Small Self:
What Awe Research Just Proved
That Scripture Knew First

Awe does something strange and measurable: it shrinks the self. It quiets the ego, expands time, lowers inflammation, and makes us kinder. The posture Scripture has always called worship turns out to be the exact experience the human mind was built to need.

The Science of Awe The Small Self Worship

On the long coast home from the moon in February 1971, the Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell had nothing to do but look out the window. The work was done; the lunar module was stowed; the capsule slowly rotated to distribute the sun's heat, so that every two minutes the Earth, the moon, the sun, and a whole panorama of stars wheeled past the glass. And somewhere in that turning, Mitchell was ambushed by something he had not trained for and could not control.

He described it afterward as an overwhelming sense of connection and unity — the planet hanging in the black, fragile and whole, and himself dissolving into it. An "explosion of awareness," he called it. The boundaries of his self seemed to thin and give way. He returned to Earth a changed man, spending the rest of his life trying to describe what had happened to him up there. The writer Frank White would later collect dozens of such accounts from astronauts and give the phenomenon a name: the overview effect. Seen from far enough away, the self gets very small — and something better rushes in to fill the space.

It sounds like the rarest experience a human can have. You have to leave the planet to get it. Except that you don't — and that is the whole point. Three thousand years before anyone broke the bonds of Earth, a shepherd lay on his back in the Judean hills, looked up instead of down, and recorded the identical experience in reverse. The vastness overhead, the same dissolving of the self, the same flood of something larger. He wrote it down as a song.

What is mankind? — the self, suddenly small against the sky. For most of history this was read as devotional poetry, a worshipper's pleasing humility. Then, beginning around 2003, a UC Berkeley psychologist named Dacher Keltner began putting awe under scientific measurement — and discovered that the shepherd had been describing a precise, replicable psychological event, one with effects running all the way down into the immune system. This is the story of that convergence: how the laboratory rediscovered worship, and found out it was good for us.

The Anatomy of AweKeltner, Haidt, and the Two Triggers

Before Keltner, awe was scientifically homeless — too fleeting, too spiritual, too hard to bottle. In a landmark 2003 paper, Keltner and the psychologist Jonathan Haidt gave it a definition crisp enough to study. Awe, they proposed, is the emotion we feel in the presence of two things at once: vastness — something far larger than the self, whether physical (a mountain, the sea, the night sky), social (a vast crowd, a towering figure), or conceptual (a grand theory, the idea of God) — and a need for accommodation, the experience exceeding our existing mental models so completely that the mind has to stretch and rebuild to take it in.

That second criterion is the subtle one, and it is the key to everything that follows. "Accommodation" is a term borrowed from the developmental psychologist Jean Piaget: it is what the mind does when reality won't fit its current categories and the categories themselves must change. Awe, by definition, is the emotion of not having a box big enough. It is what you feel at the exact moment your map of the world proves too small for the territory.

Awe was named in worship millennia before it had a science. From Kant's starry heavens to Durkheim's effervescence to Keltner's lab, the modern study of wonder has been catching up to a song.

Read those two criteria back against the worship of Scripture and the fit is uncanny, because Scripture stages awe with the same two ingredients, deliberately, every time. Consider the prophet Isaiah's vision in the temple: the Lord "high and exalted," his robe filling the space, the seraphim calling "Holy, holy, holy," the doorposts shaking, the room filling with smoke. Vastness — and then the mind that cannot contain it:

"Woe to me!" I cried. "I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips… and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty."

That cry — I am ruined — is the need for accommodation in its rawest form. Isaiah's entire model of himself shatters on contact with something too large for it. His categories fail; he must be remade. Keltner gave the experience a clinical name eighteen centuries later, but Isaiah had already lived its anatomy: vastness, the box too small, the self undone and rebuilt. This is not worship resembling awe. It is the same event, described from inside.

And here the research delivers its most theologically suggestive finding. When Keltner's team catalogued the sources of awe across twenty-six countries, the single most common trigger worldwide was not nature, not music, not cathedrals. It was what he calls moral beauty — the awe we feel witnessing other people's courage, kindness, and sacrifice. The ancient instruction to "worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness" (Psalm 29:2) names exactly this: awe directed at moral perfection itself. The thing humans most reliably stand in wonder before is goodness — which is, not incidentally, precisely what worship claims to behold.

The Shrinking SelfPsalm 8 & the Science of the Small Self

In 2015, the psychologist Paul Piff, working with Keltner, ran an experiment of almost poetic simplicity. He stationed participants in a grove of towering eucalyptus trees — some of the tallest in North America — and had one group spend a single minute gazing up into the canopy. The other group stared at a plain building. Then, as each participant turned to leave, a researcher "accidentally" dropped a handful of pens nearby.

The people who had just spent sixty seconds in awe picked up more pens. They reported feeling less entitled and less self-important, and on follow-up measures they behaved more generously and made more ethical choices. One minute of looking up at something vast had measurably loosened the grip of the self. Piff and Keltner named the effect the small self: awe diminishes the felt size and urgency of the ego, and in the space that opens, other people rush in.

Awe forms when vastness meets a mind that cannot contain it. The result is the "small self" — and from that shrinking flows a cascade of measurable goods, from generosity to a calmer immune system.

What looks like diminishment is, paradoxically, relief. To grasp why, you have to understand what the self does when left to its own devices. The mind's resting state — the default mode network, that web of self-referential brain regions — tends to fill idle time with rumination: comparing, worrying, rehearsing, defending the ego. Much of human misery is a kind of overheated self-focus; depression and anxiety are marked by a self that cannot stop monitoring itself. Awe is one of the few experiences that reliably switches this off. For a moment, you forget yourself entirely — and the forgetting feels like being set free, not erased.

The effects ripple outward into the body and even into the experience of time. In a 2012 study, Melanie Rudd, Kathleen Vohs, and Jennifer Aaker found that awe expands our sense of available time — people primed with awe felt less time-pressured, more patient, and more willing to give their time to others. And in a striking 2015 study, Jennifer Stellar and colleagues found that of all the positive emotions, awe was the strongest predictor of lower levels of interleukin-6, a marker of bodily inflammation linked to depression and chronic disease. The shrinking of the self, it turns out, registers in the bloodstream.

Now return to the shepherd-king's psalm and read it as a lab report. When I consider your heavens — that is the vastness, the input. What is mankind? — that is the small self, the output, arriving on cue. Psalm 8 is not merely expressing humility; it is documenting the small-self effect three thousand years before Piff stood his subjects under the eucalyptus trees. And the book of Job stages the fullest version: God answers Job's suffering not with arguments but with a torrent of cosmic vastness — the foundations of the earth, the storehouses of snow, the wild ox, the eagle, Leviathan — until Job arrives where awe always lands: "My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you. Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes" (Job 42:5–6). The self, undone by vastness, and reborn.

A real objection deserves an answer here, because the modern ear flinches at "despise myself" and "small self" alike: isn't this just low self-esteem — a religious endorsement of self-erasure that healthy psychology should resist? No, and the distinction is the hinge of the whole matter. The small self is not self-loathing; it is self-forgetting. Self-loathing is the ego turned against itself — still obsessively, painfully self-focused. The small self is the ego momentarily set down, the blessed silence of not thinking about yourself at all. One is a heavier cage; the other is the open door. Humility, as has often been said, is not thinking less of yourself — it is thinking of yourself less. Awe is how the mind achieves it.

The self left to itself trends toward rumination, entitlement, and inflammation. Awe inverts each one — the "small self" is not a loss but a release into something measurably healthier.

What this means in practice: awe is the rare intervention that improves you by getting you out of the way. If much of modern unhappiness is a crisis of excessive self-focus — endless self-comparison, self-curation, self-monitoring — then the small self is a direct treatment, and you can dose it deliberately. Keltner's research suggests awe is far more available than we think: not just the Grand Canyon, but the night sky, a piece of music, a great cathedral, a child's face, or the sight of someone being quietly brave. Worship is simply the practice of placing yourself, on purpose and on schedule, before the vastest thing there is.

Collective EffervescenceWhy Worship Was Always Meant to Be Sung Together

There is one more discovery, and it explains why worship, across virtually every culture, is something people do in rooms full of other people. In 1912, long before Keltner, the founding sociologist Émile Durkheim sat studying accounts of communal religious ritual and identified a force he named collective effervescence — the electric, self-transcending energy generated when a group gathers and moves, chants, or sings as one. The boundaries between individuals blur; a current of shared emotion runs through the crowd; people feel lifted into something larger than themselves. Durkheim argued, controversially, that this experience was the very engine of religion — that the sense of the sacred was born in the awe of the assembled group.

Modern science has put instruments on it. When people sing together, their physiology synchronizes — a 2013 study by Björn Vickhoff found that choir members' heart rates rose and fell in unison as they sang. Collective movement and song flood the body with the chemistry of bonding and dissolve the felt boundary of the self, exactly as Durkheim described. Awe shared in a crowd is amplified, not divided. It is, in Keltner's catalogue, one of the great reliable wonders of human life — and it is the precise thing the ancient texts kept commanding.

The whole architecture of biblical worship — the festivals that drew the nation to one city, the temple choirs, the congregational psalms, the early church meeting daily to praise "with glad and sincere hearts" — is a technology for manufacturing collective effervescence at scale, generation after generation. They built, deliberately, the conditions Durkheim would later identify and Keltner would later measure. They were engineering shared awe.

Honesty requires facing awe's dark side, because Keltner himself insists on it. Collective effervescence is morally neutral fuel; it has powered Nuremberg rallies as readily as Easter vigils. Awe can be weaponized — demagogues and cults manufacture vastness and self-loss to dissolve individual judgment and bind people to a leader. This is not a flaw in the argument; it is the reason the object of worship was never incidental. Scripture is relentlessly specific about whom to stand in awe of, precisely because the human capacity for awe is so powerful that it must not be pointed at the wrong thing. A faculty this strong is a faculty that can be hijacked.

Which raises the sharpest objection of all, and it should be met squarely: if awe is just a brain state — vastness plus a quieted default mode network plus a dose of bonding chemistry — then hasn't science explained worship away? Doesn't the mechanism debunk the meaning?

It does not, and the error is an old one — the genetic fallacy, mistaking the mechanism of an experience for a verdict on its object. That hunger has a neural mechanism does not mean food is imaginary; the mechanism is precisely how a real meal is apprehended. That awe shrinks the self in the presence of vastness says nothing, either way, about whether there is Someone behind the vastness. What the science can say is narrower and still remarkable: the response Scripture has always prescribed — awe, self-forgetting, the bowing-down of worship — is not a primitive superstition the species has outgrown. It is a real, patterned, measurable human experience that makes those who practice it humbler, kinder, calmer, and physically healthier. The lab cannot tell you what is on the other side of the awe. It can tell you the posture was never foolish.

Discovering how awe works no more explains away its object than mapping the tongue's taste buds explains away the feast. The mechanism is how something real gets in.

Set the passages beside the findings and the overlap stops looking devotional and starts looking clinical. The honest caveats matter, because overstating the case would cheapen it. Awe research is young, and some findings — the inflammation link especially — are correlational and await further replication; the prosocial effects rest on firmer experimental ground. Awe has a documented dark side. And the science is carefully silent on the question that matters most to the worshipper — whether there is truly Someone there. The claim here is narrow and sturdy: the prescribed posture matches the human design. Awe, self-forgetting, the bowing-down of worship — these turn out to be among the most reliably good things a human being can do for their mind, their character, and their body. The ancients did not know about the default mode network. They knew to look up.

Look Up

Edgar Mitchell spent the rest of his life chasing the feeling that found him on the way back from the moon — the dissolving of the self, the flood of unity and meaning. He had to travel a quarter of a million miles to stumble into it. He need not have. The experience he could only reach by leaving the Earth had been available, the entire time, to anyone willing to lie back in a field and let the night sky be as large as it actually is.

That is the quiet scandal underneath all of this research. The thing the science has rediscovered — that awe shrinks the bloated self, quiets the anxious mind, opens the clenched hand, cools the inflamed body, and binds us to one another — is not a new technology. It is the oldest practice there is. Every instruction to consider the heavens, to bow down, to be still and know, to exalt his name together, was a prescription for the precise experience the modern mind is now found to be starving for. We did not invent awe. We inherited it, and then, in a world of small screens held close to our faces, we mostly stopped looking up.

When God finally answered Job, he did not offer an explanation. He offered a sky — star fields and storehouses of snow, the wild places and the great beasts, vastness upon vastness until the questioner fell silent. It was not an evasion. It was the cure. The self that had been collapsed in on its own suffering was expanded, by awe, back into a world far larger than its grief. The Galilean tradition has a phrase for what worship does to a person: it makes them new. The science has a smaller, humbler phrase for the same event. It makes the self small — which is, it turns out, the same thing as setting it free.
